How to Read a Water Filter's Performance Claims
Words like “premium” and “advanced” tell you little about what a water filter actually does. Useful performance information is specific, documented, and tied to an identifiable product.
Find the exact model
Start with the cartridge model and any system it must be used with. Claims may apply only to a particular combination. Confirm that the listing and packaging describe the same configuration.
Look for named reduction claims
A claim for one substance is not a claim for every substance. Read the performance data sheet rather than assuming a long list of benefits applies to every cartridge in a range.
Check certification carefully
When independent certification is advertised, check the certifier's listing for the exact product and the specific claims covered. Distinguish testing to a standard from certification by an independent organization.
Read the operating conditions
Rated capacity, flow, input-water requirements, and maintenance instructions help define how a product should be used. Performance claims are not a promise that a cartridge can treat any source water indefinitely.
Match evidence to your needs
Use your supplier's water quality information or appropriate testing to identify concerns. Then choose a product with relevant documented performance. If a claim is unclear, request supporting information before buying.
